Books for People Who Don’t Like Reading

untitledA reader is a leader, people say, but on the surface the library may look unappealing and all the books look stupid. Reading is important inside and outside of school, even for people who hate books. So then what kind of books should people who don’t like books read? Let’s find out!

First of all, never judge a book by a cover. So many people miss out on the greatest books if they just look at the title or cover. Read an excerpt, there’s no need to necessarily take it home, just take the time to read a couple pages before passing judgment on a book. Books need fair judgements as well. Giving books a chance is key if you want to enjoy reading.

There are so many kinds of books: fiction, non-fiction, mystery, romance, and comedies. People should try out all sorts of books, and never limit themselves to a single category.People who don’t like to read should also check out popular books, there’s usually a reason it’s popular. It saves time not having to look through all the books in the library.

Another helpful hint is to ask the librarian for a recommendation. What sorts of books are people your age reading? What new books are there in your favorite genre? Librarians are there to help you.

Another good idea is to use websites like Goodreads, which can give you suggestions based on your taste preferences discovered through books that you have rated. For example, if you rate many classics highly, then it will give you other suggestions in classics.

Breaking Dawn: Part II Movie Review

Breaking Dawn part 2 came out November 16 2012. However the movie played  at 10pm on November 15th in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The line to get in the theater started forming around 8:15, so that people could get good seats. Although there really are no bad seats in that small of a movie theater!

THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE CONTAINS SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the fifth and last movie in the the Twilight Saga. The series only has four books but the last book was split into two different movies. The first part, Breaking Dawn Part 1 came out November 18th, 2011.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 starts right after Bella opens her eyes from the last last movie, when she has officially become a vampire. When she wakes up she looks around at the things that she never saw when she was a human. But from the moment that she woke up, she didn’t think about being thirsty like most vampires, in fact, that was the last thing she thought of. Instead she was thinking about her love, Edward, and her daughter she had just given birth to just two days ago.

Along with trying to control her thirst, Bella is also worrying about her daughter Renesmee and her extraordinary growth. In the two days that Bella was unconscious, Renesmee grew to the size of a 3 month old baby. Bella and Edward and the whole family are worried about her. She will be full grown in a matter of a year.

Now Bella gave birth to Renesmee Carlie Cullen when she was human, yet her father is a vampire, so Renesmee is a half vampire half human. Having a vampire  child is very dangerous and the Volturi will come and destroy the child no matter what. The word got to the Volturi about having a vampire child running around and the Volturi are now coming for the Cullens.

The Cullens now have to deal with trying to get the Volturi to understand that the child is not all vampire, that she is mortal, has a heart beat, has blood running in her veins, and grows faster than an average human before they kill of the entire family.
They also have to worry about how long Renesmee has until she grows so fast that she will look really old. Another problem is trying to get Bella’s father far away from the truth, for his own safety.  If he wants to be part of  Bella’s life, he will need to live life with lots of questions unanswered about why his granddaughter looks ten years old at four months old.

There are so many problems to overcome in the movie, which ones will be completed? Will the Cullen’s find a way to get through to the Volturi and save their lives? Will Renesmee growth soon come to slow, or continue until she has an old body? “I nearly cried when (A CERTAIN CHARACTER)’s head got punched off!” said Brianna H.

The movie was a success with lots of hoots when Jacob took his shirt off. There’s some confusion at the ending where everyone was fooled and mad, but it all worked out at the end. ” I thought it was really good and probably the best out of the series! I liked how they added some humor into parts and it was super cute!” says Breanna K.

DIY Christmas Projects

This Christmas try to get creative with festivities. Make your own ornaments, holiday greeting cards, or wrapping paper. Try your hand at making your own cookie recipes and leave your original treats out for Santa! Don’t think you are skilled enough to do any of this? Try looking on the internet for recipes. Allrecipes.com is fabulous and diynetwork.com is amazing for all your crafty needs. Of course you can always Google what you want to make, or simply go crazy on your own! But for now, here are 5 unique things to try over this winter season.

Paper Ball Ornaments:

These are a quick and easy way to start off your creative splendor! The supply list is very short,  consisting of thick colored paper of your choice, scissors, glue, and twine. The first step is to cut your paper into several circles which are all the same size. Second, fold all the circles in half. After all the circles have been folded glue each folded circle on top of one another, making a big stack. Stick the twine into the crevice of the papers, where they are not yet connected. (Before you do so make sure you have a loop at the end of the twine to hand the ball by.) Glue the twine in, glue the remaining pieces of paper together, and voila! You have a paper ball ornament!

Retro Striped Glass Ornament:

This is another simple start to your creative train and just like the paper ball ornaments it has very few steps and even less supplies. You will need a clear glass Christmas ornament bulb, masking tape, and paint. First, carefully wash your bulb, there is nothing worse than a brand spanking new retro bulb with fingerprints all over it. Next, take the making tape and apply it in stripes around the bulb leaving even spaces in between. Next, carefully paint the whole bulb and make sure your brush strokes are going in the same way as the tape to ensure none slips underneath. Lastly, wait for the paint to dry and then peel the tape of.  Presto! You have a brand new ornament. Another variation of this is to put the tape in any pattern you want, this will keep things interesting and keep you from getting bored of doing the same thing over and over.

Wrapping Paper:

Although there is really no great way to wrap presents (besides the obvious and very typical wrapping paper) that doesn’t mean there aren’t hundreds of dashing ways to uniquely, not to mention stylishly, wrap you presents. You could go vintage with lots of old, worn-looking papers covering you gift. You could wrap each present based on the individual who is receiving it. For example if your Aunt Beth likes to travel, wrap her present in a map or pictures of exotic places. Breanna Knutson loves wrapping her younger brothers presents in the comics because he enjoys them so much! There are no limits to how you can wrap a present, so go crazy, and if you need more ideas check out this website for some inspiration: Your inspiration outlook.

Gum Drop Ornament:

Although these yummy ornaments may be a little simplistic for hard-time crafter Abbey Millerbrend, who admits to liking a good challenge in her crafts every now and then, they are great for making with the kids you babysit or your siblings. These are really simple and kid friendly. Supplies include Styrofoam balls, hot glue gun, gum drops, scissors, and ribbon. Take the ball and glue gum drops all over it, you can go in patterns or shapes or scenes, or cover the whole ball, it’s up to you! Then glue on a string to it and BAM you are finished!

All of these crafts are super fun and easy, even if you aren’t too into craft making. Take it from Abbey Millerbrend who says, “I love making Christmas crafts!” If Abbey can do them then so can you!

“The Hobbit” – Movie Review

Home is now behind you. The world is ahead.

hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-bilbo-baggins-poster-ggnoads

The long awaited prequel to the wildly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy was released in theaters last Friday, December 14th. This adventure film follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, (Martin Freeman) a hobbit quite content to ignore, and be ignored, by the bigger folk. However that is not the case, as the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) sweeps him off into the world on a daring quest along with a hearty group of thirteen dwarves. It was directed by Peter Jackson, who also directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Hobbit has received generally favorable reviews. Out of 102,354 votes on IMBd.com the average score was 8.5/10. And it received  65% rotten (despite the name, that’s actually pretty good; it’s equivalent to 3/5 stars) on RottenTomatoes.com. They say, “Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth is an earnest, visually resplendent trip, but the film’s deliberate pace robs the material of some of its majesty.” This is probably in part due to the fact that The Hobbit was a single book, but it is being made into a movie trilogy.

TheHobbit_021-1

Bilbo is shocked when thirteen dwarves show up at his house, uninvited, one night.

What The Hobbit has that the Lord of the Rings Trilogy lacked, is humor and lightheartedness. While LOTR had plenty of battle scenes and somber moments, The Hobbit has a good amount of funny parts and is more kid-friendly. I would have to agree that it was just a tad slow at parts, but definitely did not feel like the 169 minutes that it actually was.

Many North Lakes students went to see the Hobbit as well. Margret Krueger loved the part when Gollum, (the hideous yet somewhat lovable creature who first had possession of the Ring) and Bilbo have a game of riddles, where Bilbo plays for the high stakes of his life.

If you’d like to see The Hobbit (which I would recommend) it is still playing in theaters and is rated PG-13 for for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images. To see the trailer, click here!

Hair Styles to Fit Your Face Shape

Do you feel like your hairstyle does not fit your face shape? Well, take it from an expert. Here are some hairstyles that might fit you.

Do you have a round face? Well according to famous hair stylist to the celebrities Chris McMillan, from Los Angeles, Califoria, asymmetrical and uneven cuts are best for you. Try to use mixed lengths, shagged around your face, such as is worn by famous actress Emma Stone. He also suggests a deep side part and side swept bangs give your face a slimmer look.

Want another great tip? Try long layers past your chin. Try keeping your hair smooth and avoid frizzing around the face as it will make you face look fuller.
Another attractive style to use is making a sleek pony tail. A completely different direction, and still very attractive style is the pixy look with short layers around the face help enphasize cheekbones and eyes.

What if you have an oval face? Chris suggest that those girls go for blunt bangs across the brow line, like Taylor Swift. This cut to the bangs can give an illusion of width. Chris says to also use a center part with shoulder length hair. Also flattering is a bob with side bangs. This breaks up the long face and offers softness. This has been a popular look for people such as Carrie Underwood. Chris Said she had worn this look for quite a long time.

For square faced gals, a soft tailored bob is great and it shouldt hit rightaround the  chin. This look has been stunning for Kiera Knightly. You could try longer hair styles, but include a lot of loose waves to the end starting at the ears- like Meghan Fox

Heart face can enjoy a bouncy curly bob that ends at the chin. This can de-enphasise the triangle shape. Also again, you can use a side part and side swept bangs like Reese Wither spoon. Try also the pixy with side swept bangs like Carey Mulligan.

You will be looking fabulous according to the man who our top film and TV stars go to for the best beauty advice. You too can be looking good like the stars.

Hairstyles: Braids 101

Girls, (and maybe some boys), do you need some cute hairstyles to wear around the house, or for school, or even a date? Are you getting bored of the  hairstyles you have now? Here are two braids that will for sure make you look cute. We will start off with a general braid and then the and then a fishtail braid. It is easier if you try these hairstyles on other people so you can see what you are doing.

Regular braid: This is the basic braid that is the most simple to do. You should know how to do this one first because a lot of braids are similar to this one. Once you get a hang of it, you can make multiple braids, or make buns out of them.

1st Step:Separate your hair into 3 even sections. Place the left section between your left index finger and thumb, let the middle section hang free and place the right section between your right index finger and thumb. This will start the process of braiding.

2nd step: Grab the middle section with your right middle finger and pull it so it passes behind the right section. Extend your right thumb and index finger so that portion of hair becomes the middle section.

3rd step:  Use the left middle finger to pull the middle section behind the left section. Extend or straighten the left index finger and thumb to make the left section become the middle section.

4th step: Shift the portion of hair hooked in the right middle finger so it sits between the right index finger and thumb. Repeat the process, then shift the portion of the hair hooked in the left middle finger so it sits between the left index finger and thumb. Easy so far?

5th step: Just repeat until you are done, then tie it up with a binder!

Fishtail. Once you know how to braid, then you can start on doing more complicated braids such as the fishtail braid. This is a pretty hairstyle to do. It may take you a few trys to get it down, so do not give up! Here are Breanna’ K.’s thoughts, “So I learned how to fishtail braid from a YouTube video and I actually found it pretty easy. It took me about a day to get it down, but now I find it easy to do. I usually wear it whenever I feel like doing something easy with my hair since it only takes me a few minutes to do but it looks cute!”

Step one: Brush your hair out so that there are not snarls and it is nice and smooth.

Step 2: Take a chunk of hair, it doesn’t matter how big or small, just make sure it is enough to make into a braid. If you have layers, its recommended to do the top layer first, or it might fall out.

Step 3: Separate the hair into two even sections.

step 4: Go behind the right (or left, it doesn’t matter what strip you start on) section and take a small chunk from the strip.

Step 5: Then go to the left and take a piece from the opposite side and bring it the the other strip. Pull tight so it is neat.

Step 6: Repeat the steps until you get the length that you like.

Now that you learned the basic braid and the fishtail braid, you can look for other braids to try, such as the french braid, or the waterfall braid. There are many different braids you can learn.

Try manicured nails at home!

Are you tired of having to go to the expense and time of visiting a nail salon just to do your nails? Well, I was so I decided there had to be a way for me to save my money and still be able to look good. I researched and discovered that it really is not that hard to do nails at home.

All you need for basic nail care is an inexpensive manicure nail kit, some tooth picks, colored and clear nail polish and a few simple instructions.

First: Wash your hands with warm, sudsy water, being sure you clean up under your nails and into your cuticles. Make sure you get all the oil and dirt of your finger tips as well. Dry off with a clean towel.

Second: You will need to examine your nails and see if they are shaped right or decide if you need to file or clip them to make them all uniform in length and shape. If you need to shape them use a good emery board with two different roughness textures. It’s easy to to sand down the top and shape the sides. There are also battery operated manicure appliances you can buy and they work very quickly to get your nail shaped just right. As soon as you get the desired shape on top, work quickly to use a cuticle tool, usually a short wooden stick with a rounded bottom that is flat on one end. The cuticle should still be soft from the warm soapy water. You can just push down the cuticle toward the base of you nail bed. If there is excess skin, you need get your cuticle scissors and clip it free of the area.

Third: Now you are ready to shine and buff if you are going for a natural look. There are many oils and shine products you can buff in to your nails to make them look healthy and shinny. If you want to get a more dramatic look you go to step four.

Fourth: In order to get a French manicure look which is the basic white tip effect, you can simply place your emery board over the main part of you nail, leaving the tip exposed and paint a white tip over the expose area. The roundness of the emery board will serve as your guide and protect the area underneath that is not to get painted white. Let that dry, and finish with a clear top coat. There are variations you can do, such as painting a pink tint at the base of the nail prior to topcoat. You can decide.

Fifth: If you want to create a design and have colored nails, you will need to get a colored nail polish of you choice. Simply paint your entire nail the color you want and let dry. Next you need to decide on a design such as a flower or stripe, etc. You can find numerous nail polish bottles specifically designed to do a decal design. They are at Target, Ulta, Walmart and even at the dollar store. Practice your design a couple times on paper with your polish kit. The bottle has a smaller brush for specific lining. I typically use a toothpick because I find it is easy to control. I break the toothpick in half to get a different edge. You can also use an ear cleaner and break it in half. It works good for flowers. Simply dip the toothpick in polish and experiment like a child with a box of paints. Your designs are as endless as your imagination.

I hope that was a helpful instruction in nail care. I love doing nails and as you can see it is very easy and inexpensive to do them yourself at home. Better yet, you will love them because they will be your own design.

Eye Makeup: What Color Are You?

Makeup is exciting again. No more are we seeing the same blue eye shadow  and black eyeliner of the the Barbie doll past. Today’s makeup  is as unique as you are. The leading makeup developers have invested a lot of money and time trying to create a variety of colors and finishes that give women an extra boost of confidence. They boast that their makeup can make any woman look beautiful. The manufacturers of Almay, for example, say they can make brown eyes look amazing with their suggested combination of iced cocoa for the lid, silver frost for the crease, and cool peach for just below the brow.  Sephora cosmetics, on the other hand, states their stunning color for a blue-eyed woman would be their Kitten-shimmering nude pink.  They go on to suggest a green-eyed gal would look best in a smoky color  that is  applied on the outer eyelid shared by a frosting white shimmer on the inner lid.

Another huge area of makeup development revolves around a woman’s desire to look beautiful while maintaining ethical and personal beliefs.  For example, some woman will only purchase makeup that is has not been developed using testing  on animals . Others would never consider purchasing anything that is not completely organic. According the U.S. National Organics Program (NOP), these natural substances must be created from plant, mineral and animal product. For some, these sources are acceptable as long as they have not undergone any synthetic process.  Some woman however, would not consider using an organic product if it involved using animal sources.  The colors and selection are still very important to woman who only use organics. This market is highly profitable as their beauty options keep expanding.  Today’s women are willing to pay big money to achieve their own unique look through makeup while keeping their values in place.

Makeup manufacturers now employ makeup artists in department stores, independent makeup boutiques and kiosks to soley perform makeovers and promote their products. Women often purchase whatever products are used to create their new looks, making it a profitable process.

There are manufacturers of cosmetics who create products to make women feel they will look uniquely younger amongst other woman their age.  They also promote a large spread of colors to enhance eye color and detract signs of  aging.  When a woman feels beautiful leaving a fresh makeover, she tends to want to re-live the experience.  Often a new shade of lipstick and a dramatic eye shadow will create a lifted spirit and a fun new attitude.

All in all the makeup industry has found out the secret to a woman’s heart. They use their products to make these woman feel special and uniquely beautiful.  They have convinced woman that by using the same eye shadows and makeup worn by everyone else, they stop being noticed. The message has brought them huge profits in exchange.  These same manufacturers have been able to adapt with the times as women began demanding new things, such as organic makeup   and humanely produced products.  It is hard to see the harm in large makeup moguls getting rich as long as woman feel equally as rich in beauty and self confidence.

The Hidden Meanings in Children Songs

What do you sing to your child to sleep? Have you really thought about what you are teaching children to sing when you’re with them? The old nursery rhymes have violent hidden meanings behind the songs. Here are some well known songs that you may know.

Ring Around the Rosie – People say that this is about the black Plague. This seems like a fun game that makes kids giggle and have fun. “Ring around the rosie” refers to the rings that people get from the Black Plague. “Pocket full of posies” refers to the posies that were a popular way of fending off the Plague. The final line of this song, “ashes, ashes, they all fall down” is talking about death.

Mary Mary – (Like  Bloody Mary)
Mary Mary, how does your garden Grown? (Garden= Graveyard) With silver Bells and cockle shells (Instruments of torture) And pretty Maids all in a row. (Maids is a device to behead people called the maiden.) Brutal isn’t it?

Jack And Jill- In the nursery rhyme, Jack (King Louis XVI) fell and broke his crown. In reality King Louis did broke  his crown, but in another sense: he was beheaded. Then Jill (Marie Antoinette) came tumbling after. In the nursery rhyme there was a different ending which said Jack wrapped his head with vinegar and brown paper. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out like that in real life.

Rock a Bye Baby/Hush a Bye Baby – What does that song mean? This is a common song to try to get your child to sleep. But have you ever really listen to the lyrics?  And notice the BYE in the song? When the bough breaks the cradle will fall, And down will come baby, cradle and all. So you’re singing about a baby who falls from a tree? There are several meanings behind this song. What do you think it means?
Breanna Knutson – “I just think it’s about a baby that died I guess.”
Melanie Peter – “Well to me it sounds really mysterious, so I think its about like a ghost baby.”

“There was and Old Woman who lived in a shoe” – She had so many kids and did not know what to do. Obviously she is stressed out, poor, and neglects her children.  She gave them some broth without any bread, so they get to go to bed hungry. She also whips them soundly and sent them to bed. Wow, so she whips her children before bedtime too?  Now that’s harsh.  Still want to tell that to a child before bedtime?

Oh My Darling, Clementine –  Well if you haven’t noticed, Clementine drowns, and if you didn’t know that, sorry for shouting that out and ruining a pretty tune. Ruby lips above the water, blowing bubbles, soft and fine, but, alas,  I was no swimmer, So I lost my Clementine. And so she drowns. Poor Clementine.

Now after you have read this you may now have an understanding of what children rhymes are about. These are not the the only songs that are like this. Do some research on your favorite childhood nursery rhyme and see what the real meaning is!
